Needham, MA Blizzard of 2011/1978
In 1978 I left for Florida February 1st. It was my first trip to Florida. My mother-in-law gave me 2 tickets for my son and I to visit my parents who had just moved there. Little did I know that I would miss The Blizzard of 1978. When people speak of it I feel like I missed something really wonderful. It seems everyone I know has fond memories of that time. One friend from Needham had people come and stay with her because they were stranded on Route 128 now more known as Route 95.
It was so cold in Florida for those 10 days that I wore my winter coat every day but the last day. It was windy and cloudy a good deal of the time. That did not keep me from Florida after that because we must have gone 25 times since then and love it. In fact I am dreaming my next trip there right now, especially after the storm yesterday. We did not even get plowed out until 11:00 last night but we understood. So glad they came though. We have an enormously long driveway and my husband had to go on an emergency today to Fitchburg. It all worked out.

There were parts of Massachusetts that got 3 feet of snow this year. From looking at the snow it appears to me to be about 2 feet in Needham but I did not measure. It was quite the blizzard with lightening to boot. Now the weathermen are talking of another weekend storm. Oh my! This reminds me of days gone by as a child when we got a lot of snow and built igloos and spent all day out in the snow building forts, sledding, skiing, toboganing, getting all wet and loving every minute of it and no school that day.
Of highest priority is the children's safety so Needham Schools were closed Wednesday to complete the plowing for entering and exiting the school safely. The town works in coordination with the Needham Police to determine where to plow for safety of the children.
It is a winter wonderland out there and slushy a bit on the roads of Needham but traffic is running quite nicely. There is a beautiful picture outside my window if only I was an artist to capture it on canvas. Needham is a beautiful town no matter what the season. The people of Needham are great people and the community spirit is simply great.
