Filene’s Boston, MA Memories

Filene’s Boston, MA Memories

So many memories when I think of Filene’s or Filene’s Basement.  As a young child I remember my father taking me to Washington to shop.  My parents liked Filene’s over Jordan Marsh (gone).  Now both stores are gone.  I remember especially shopping for Easter clothes with my Dad in the city.  Those are fond memories.  It is sad to see another store go away.

Today’s Globe link to the history of Filene’s in pictures and text:

Globe File 1953  My dad could have been in this crowd somewhere.

In the late 60’s I work at 225 Franklin Street in Boston and went to Filene’s or Filene’s basement almost daily.  It gave me something to do on my lunch hour.

Fast forward to when we moved to Needham  by then other stores had emerged like Bradlees(gone) and Zayres(gone).  In Needham center we had Elaine’s, which became Decelle’s (gone) and in Needham there was a Filene’s basement store.  I almost always shopped at Filene’s or Elaine’s.  In later years I shopped a lot at Calverts (gone) and miss that so much.

In the early 70’s I did some Nanny work and took care of one of the Filene’s Executives' children every day of the work week.  So Filene’s has been in my life for a very long time.

It seems that Marshall’s and TJ Max dominate this industry around here.  The stores that have been part of our lives for so many years are going away and some very recently.
